Experimental Studies of Paragonimus iloktsuenensis

Abstract
The infection rates and the recovery rates of Paragonimus iloktsuenensis were examined in experimentally infected albino rats. Excysted larvae of P. iloktsuenensis were administered 34 times to albino rats in various doses(34 to 100 excysted larvae per rat) during the ten year period of 1989 and 1998. They were detected as worms in the lung at two to 36 weeks after infection.
The infection rates of the albino rats were calculated as the ratio between rats with worms in the lung and rats without worms in the lung. The recovery rates of the worms were calculated as the number of worms found in the rats over the number of excysted larvae.
The results were as follows:
1. The infection rates and the recovery rates are shown in Table 1. The average
infection rate of all groups was 72.6%(range: 60% to 90.6%). The mean number of
worms recovered per experimental rat was 5.4(range: 1.9 to 10.6), and the mean
recovery rate was 9.0%.
2. The infection and recovery rates demonstrated marked differences according to the times of infection. The mean recovery rate was in the range of 4.3¡20.9(mean: 9.0%)
